As we celebrate our veterans this Veterans Day, here at Wellthy we want to ensure families are clear on the benefits available. Wellthy assists families with VA-related tasks in up to 15% of care projects. As such, we have some best practices for making sure your family is receiving the benefits they've earned.
While there are 18.8 million veterans in the United States, only about 50% are served by the Department of Veterans Affairs (or the VA). So, why aren't more people taking advantage of these services? Let's dig in.
What is the VA?
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs offers benefits to Americans who have served in the military and to their families. The VA provides access to healthcare coverage through a network of healthcare facilities and doctors as well as burial and memorial services, and other benefits, like support for compensation, education and training, home loans, life insurance, and vocational rehabilitation. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, with over 1,700 hospitals across the country. VA beneficiaries include service members and veterans, as well as their independents and survivors.
What's the hesitation?
Why aren't all veterans taking advantage of these benefits? Unfortunately, accessing VA benefits isn't easy. Like our national healthcare system, the VA system is complex and the application process surfaces more questions than most people anticipate.
As Martha Rodriguez, one of Wellthy's Care Coordinators, says "The VA is such a complex system. Families can get easily overwhelmed with the requests for information and needs from the VA. It can quickly become so overwhelming that those who could benefit give up."
Best Practices from Wellthy Care Coordinators
We chatted with a few of our Care Coordinators with VA expertise to pull together the following list to consider if you think you or your loved one should receive VA benefits.
- Check eligibility. Before putting forth the time and energy, we'll want to make sure you or your family member is eligible for VA benefits.
- Start early. It takes time to gather the right information and it will likely involve multiple family members, so give yourself some time to pull the right information together. Don't worry though, we'll guide you through every step!
- Organization is key. Having documents organized will help speed things along. We'll help digitize and centralize all information in your Wellthy account.
- Remain calm. We'll take it one step at a time, it's a walk not a sprint, but it's well worth the time and effort.
We'll help you submit your application online, by phone, or in-person at your local VA medical facility.
We hope this helps provide some guidance on the VA as you or your loved one considers applying. On behalf of Wellthy, we thank our veterans for their service on this Veterans Day and everyday. We look forward to helping your family to ensure you have the coverage you need and deserve. As always, please let us know if you have any questions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
